SmoothRide Baucher Snaffle

SmoothRide bits are made of stainless steel bit that has been sanded down for horses comfort.

This bit features a curved mouthpiece as well as cleverly designed lozenge with a copper roller which continues along the anatomical shape of the bit. The curvature in this bit creates a mild tongue relief if worn in the classic way.

The loose ring, eggbutt, elevator and gag bits of this line can be used “upside down” to provide mild bar relief and give you a hint whether your horse prefers more pressure to be directed towards the center or the side of the tongue above bars.

We find this to be a great starter bit and a less expensive alternative to other premium bits as it is versatile, generally well accepted and tends to take up less space in the horse’s mouth without being unnecessarily harsh than many other alternatives.

We find that horses that resist the flat links often seen in classic double jointed snaffles tend to like the smoothness of this bit.

The baucher or sometimes called hanging cheekpiece creates the most stability of all cheekpieces and pulls the bit up away from the bars.

The hanging cheek stops the bit from being pulled through the horse’s mouth and is therefore a great alternative to full cheek or even eggbutt bits for younger horses.

This cheekpiece is often used on sensitive young horses or those who prefer bits with bar relief or a negative poll pressure.

Mouthpiece thickness: 4.75" and above - 15mm ; up to 4.5" - 12mm

Total Cheekpiece Height: 90mm

Cheekpiece Height Top to Mouthpiece: 50mm

Love this bit. Using it on 2 very different horses and getting wonderful results on both. Thank you for making it affordable to acquire different bits to have available to try.

Patiently improving each ride

My Connemara has “always” worn a French link, so that’s what I started with. After consulting with a bit fitter for increasing behavioural issues, I chose this smooth ride Baucher snaffle. First couple rides I could tell the new feel surprised him by the way he held his head and neck very still, but he also had a bit of “freight train” confidence in leaning into pressure from this softer bit. Each ride is more relaxed as the days progress. Happy with taking the chance - it seems to be paying off.

Magical bit!

This bit has been really helpful for my mare who is sensitive to poll pressure and tended to lock her jaw against a hand that was too strong in an eggbutt snaffle. I tried this bit from my trainer and she is so much happier with both myself and my students that ride her. I have tried this bit on a few others as well and for the most part, they have all responded really well! There was only one horse out of 4 that didn’t like it.
