D-Ring Bits

The D Ring cheekpiece is a gentle yet versatile choice and is suitable for all training levels.

It can be useful to think of a D Ring cheekpiece as a hybrid between the eggbutt and the full cheek offering both stability and enhanced lateral control by applying some pressure on the cheeks when steering.

D-Ring cheekpieces are particularly popular in the Western and Hunter rings.

How To Wear It

A properly fitted Hunter D-Ring bit should sit comfortably in the horse’s mouth, allowing for clear and even communication. The cheekpieces should be adjusted to keep the bit stable and not too high in the mouth.

Adjusting the Cheekpieces

The cheekpieces should hold the bit steady without excessive slack. If the bit moves too much when the reins are engaged, tighten the cheekpieces slightly to keep it in place while still allowing natural movement.

Even on Both Sides

Make sure both sides of the bridle are adjusted to the same length so the D-rings sit symmetrically on each side of the face. Uneven cheekpieces can create uneven pressure on the horse’s mouth and poll, leading to discomfort or resistance.

Snug Fit Is Best

The cheekpieces should sit snuggly against the lips to prevent any shifting of the mouthpiece and ensure that the lateral support of the cheekpieces work as intended.

Frequently Asked Questions About D-Ring Bits

Who should consider using D-Ring Bits?

he Hunter D-Ring bit is best suited for young horses that are still learning about contact and turning, horses that need lateral support or those competing in the hunter ring.

Horses That Need Lateral Support

The straight and extended bar is a great option for horses that need extra lateral support but cannot wear a full cheek due to safety reasons (e.g. have a risk of getting the full cheek caught in other objects) or as a rider preference.

Horses Competing in the Hunter Ring

The D-ring snaffle is the classic, widely accepted choice in the hunter ring.

Young or Green Horses

Gentle lateral guidance from the D-rings aids in teaching steering without harshness, making it ideal for training.
