Baucher Bits

Bauchers or often called hanging cheek snaffles are bits with the most fixed position in the mouth. They often are preferred by nervous horses, horses with sensitive bars and horses that don't like the weight of the bit resting on their tongue.

We find that they are particularly well suited to younger horses that are sensitive and riders who are still trying to develop and independent seat. The stability of the bit helps with minimising unintended movement and therefore makes riders aids clearer for the horse to understand.

How To Wear It

A properly fitted Baucher bit sits in the mouth with the cheekpieces attaching to the small fixed rings above the mouthpiece and the reins attaching to the larger rings below. The goal is to maintain stability without excessive tightness.

Reins Go on The Lower Ring

Attach the reins to the larger lower rings. Maintain light but consistent contact to take advantage of the Baucher’s stabilizing effect without overloading the tongue.

Bridle Fit Considerations

The cheekpieces should be adjusted so that the bit sits still without pulling the bridle down. If the bit lifts excessively when the reins are engaged, it may be too tight.

Correct Adjustment For Comfort

Ensure the bit sits high enough to avoid dropping too low on the bars but not so high that it creates wrinkles at the lips. It should sit comfortably against the lips without pulling the bridle upwards.

Frequently Asked Questions About Baucher Bits

Who should consider using Baucher Bits?

The Baucher bit is best suited for horses that prefer stability, riders who need precise aids, and those looking to avoid poll pressure. Its fixed cheekpiece design keeps the mouthpiece steady, making it ideal for sensitive horses, dressage riders, and those working on refined contact. The forward rotation of the bit ensures pressure stays on the tongue and lips without pulling on the poll, making it a great choice for horses that dislike leverage or excessive movement in the mouth.

Horses Sensitive to Poll Pressure

A perfect option for horses that react negatively to poll pressure. Unlike leverage bits, the Baucher relieves tension on the poll by rotating forward, keeping the focus on tongue and lip pressure instead.

Riders Seeking Smoother Connection

Great for riders who prefer precise rein communication without unnecessary movement. The Baucher's stability allows for refined and controlled aids, making it a great bot for beginner riders and especially useful for young horses still seeking to establish steadiness in connection in dressage and driving.

Horses Seeking Stability

Ideal for horses that struggle with excessive bit movement in the mouth. The fixed cheekpiece provides a steady feel, making it easier for the horse to maintain consistent contact without fussing.
