This bit is a special design of Laura Burtt, owner of LAB Equestrian, NCCP Equestrian Canada competition coach and a LANTRA certified bit fitter.

SmoothRide Blue bits are made of sweet iron that is known to be more palatable to picky horses.

This bit features a curved mouthpiece as well as cleverly designed lozenge which continues along the anatomical shape of the bit. The curvature in this bit creates a mild tongue relief if worn in the classic way.

The loose ring, eggbutt, D-Ring, elevator and gag bits of this line can be used “upside down” to provide mild bar relief and give you a hint whether your horse prefers more pressure to be directed towards the center or the side of the tongue above bars.

We find this to be a great starter bit and a less expensive alternative to other premium bits as it is versatile, generally well accepted and tends to take up less space in the horse’s mouth without being unnecessarily harsh than many other alternatives.

We find that horses that resist the flat links often seen in classic double jointed snaffles tend to like the smoothness of this bit.

This bit features a Fulmer cheekpiece which is a combination between a full cheek that offers stability through the turns and a loose ring that brings about more responsiveness compared to a fixed cheekpiece.

Mouthpiece thickness: 4.75" and above - 15mm ; up to 4.5" - 12mm

Please note that sweet iron bits oxidise naturally and the blue parts will over time develop a thin layer of rust and turn brown/grey. This is by design as the "rust" is what creates the taste so many horses love.

SmoothRide Mouthpiece

SmoothRide mouthpiece features a curved mouthpiece as well as cleverly designed lozenge with a copper roller which continues along the anatomical shape of the bit. A gentle , medium thickness starter option for horses at various stages of training.

Fulmer Cheekpiece

The Fulmer Bit is a variation of the full cheek bit, designed to provide lateral stability and clear rein aids while allowing more movement in the mouth. The extended cheeks prevent the bit from sliding through the mouth, offering additional steering support. It can be used with or without keepers—when used with keepers, it maintains a more fixed position, while without keepers, it allows for greater movement. The Fulmer bit is a versatile choice for riders looking for the benefits of a full cheek with the added flexibility and movement of a loose ring.

Sweet Iron

Sweet iron is a blue iron alloy designed to oxidize over time, creating a sweet taste that encourages salivation. As it rusts, it develops a patina that enhances flavor, which many horses find appealing. While sweet iron promotes a moist mouth, it does wear over time and requires maintenance. To care for it, wipe the bit after use to prevent excessive rust buildup, store it in a dry place when not in use, and scrub gently with a cloth or mild abrasive if excessive rust forms.

Wonderful Fulmer

Nice blue steel mouth piece with slight curve, better than any of the plain snaffle alternatives. My horse loves it.

Great Value!

A very well made bit! I have a new horse with a very busy mouth who is tricky in the connection. Agador pricing makes it possible for me to afford to try a lot of bits to find the one that my horse is most comfortable with. I recently purchased the ExLab Smooth Ride Blue Fulmer snaffle because I felt the full cheek could offer stability but the loose ring gives more response with subtle feel. I only have 5 rides in it so far but his acceptance is definitely better than previous snaffles. Perhaps it's not the final choice but it's great to know there are so many affordable options!
