SmoothShape bits are our take on the Waterford mouthpiece. SmoothShape bits are made of stainless steel that has been sanded down and polished for horses' comfort.

The classic Waterford is a bit that’s often used for correcting horse’s that lock their jaws or lean on the bit. The design typically include sharp or protruding links that make leaning uncomfortable for the horse.

Our take on the Waterford mouthpiece is that it need not be sharp or uncomfortable for the horse. The multiple links ensure that the bit is highly mobile and there is not much to “hang on to”.

We recommend this mouthpiece for horses that are heavy and unresponsive and need a highly mobile bit to achieve acceptance.

This bit features a Hunter Style D ring cheekpiece which is a fixed cheekpiece that offers more stability. The extended bar on the cheekpiece adds support which makes it a good choice for horses that might struggle through turns.

Mouthpiece thickness: 4.75" and above - 15mm ; up to 4.5" - 12mm

Smoothshape Mouthpiece

Smoothshape is the medium-thick option in our Waterford line. A mouthpiece with smooth edges, minimal pressure points and five links, this design is optimised for mobility and acceptance. This mouthpiece is particularly suitable for horses that can be strong and dull with the aids.

Hunter Dee Cheekpiece

The D Ring cheekpiece is a gentle yet versatile choice and is suitable for all training levels. It can be useful to think of a D Ring cheekpiece as a hybrid between the eggbutt and the full cheek offering both stability and enhanced lateral control by applying some pressure on the cheeks when steering. D-Ring cheekpieces are particularly popular in the Western and Hunter rings.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a highly durable, non-rusting metal that remains smooth and neutral in taste. It is one of the most common materials for bits due to its strength and longevity. Unlike sweet iron or German silver, it does not encourage salivation, but it provides a reliable and maintenance-free option. To care for stainless steel bits, rinse with water and dry after each use, polish occasionally to maintain shine, and disinfect with mild solutions when necessary.

Love this bit!

Bit is perfect for my young horse that can be a bit reactive but also lean when jumping. With this bit he is much more relaxed, forward, and rideable! Very happy with this purchase!
