Everything You Need to Know About the Eggbutt Cheekpiece

Really versatile and increasingly common, a simple eggbutt snaffle should be part of any riders toolbox. We are seeing more and more young horses started in the eggbutt or the D ring which is extremely similar in action.
Eggbutt cheekpieces are fixed in place in relation to the mouthpiece (see Image 2), i.e. the ring does not rotate freely as in loose ring bits. This limits the bits movement in the mouth and makes the contact steadier.
Eggbutt snaffles are great for horses that need stability in their mouth. Because the ring does not move in proportion to the mouthpiece they are great for:
⭐horses that are not yet steady in contact
⭐horses that can be overreactive and busy in their mouth
⭐riders that are not yet very steady in their hand
While a lot depends on the mouthpiece eggbutt cheekpieces typically won't be used to solve or improve the following issues:
📍stiffness and heaviness on the hand
📍needing more refined aids through the hand
We have a variety of eggbutt bits in our store and if you are looking for something specific, don't hesitate to reach out.
Happy riding! 🙂
