This CalmBlue Baucher version features an innovative tapered design that combines FEI/EC compliance with our signature tongue relief system. The mouthpiece maintains 12mm diameter at the cheeks to meet international competition requirements while tapering to 10mm in the center - perfect for horses needing more tongue space without sacrificing stability.

This intelligent design offers the best of both worlds: the thicker cheek sections provide enhanced stability while the slimmer center portion preserves the anatomical comfort that made the original CalmBlue so popular.

Crafted in sweet iron with our signature blue coating, this bit naturally oxidizes to create a pleasant taste that encourages acceptance. The fixed copper inlay in the barrel (non-rotating to ensure competition legality) maintains FEI/USEF/EC compliance while enhancing the taste profile.

The Baucher cheek design provides increased stability in the mouth, making it an excellent choice for horses who prefer a quieter feel or those that benefit from a consistent, steady contact. The slight lift in the bit’s position helps create a balanced connection without poll pressure, making it a fantastic option for dressage and eventing horses.

Is this bit right for my horse?

Riders often choose this bit for:

Horses with a thick, fleshy tongue: the slim 10mm barrel link takes up less room, and a fleshy tongue usually needs a thinner bit, not a thicker one
Low palates
Tongue evasions: getting the tongue over the bit or sticking it out. This is our usual first suggestion
Head tossing linked to palate interference: the barrel link sits low and does not rotate up into the palate
Horses that chew or grab the bit with their teeth (metal, non-ported)

Worth knowing:

Sweet iron cannons develop a warm taste that encourages salivation and a softer connection, with a copper roller on the barrel link
This bit will rust, and it needs to: the surface patina is what creates the warm, sweet taste. Do not submerge it in water or expose it to excessively humid or moist environments, and always wipe it dry after use to ensure longevity and function

The Baucher holds the bit steady, lifts it off the bars and puts no pressure on the poll under contact. Often the pick for rooters and bar-sensitive horses.

The mouthpiece maintains 12mm diameter at the cheeks to meet international competition requirements while tapering to 10mm in the center - perfect for horses needing more tongue space.

Baucher Cheekpiece

Bauchers or often called hanging cheek snaffles are bits with the most fixed position in the mouth. Contrary to popular belief baucher bits exert no leverage or pressure on the poll. In fact, pressure studies have shown baucher cheekpiece to relieve poll pressure by floating the bridle leathers that attach to the top ring upwards as reins are engaged. The stability of the bit helps with minimising unintended movement and therefore makes riders aids clearer for the horse to understand. Baucher bits are a great choice for less experienced riders and horses or those who prefer maximum stability in the cheekpiece. They often are preferred by nervous horses, horses with sensitive bars and horses that don't like the weight of the bit resting on their tongue.

Sweet Iron

Sweet iron is a blue iron alloy designed to oxidize over time, creating a sweet taste that encourages salivation. As it rusts, it develops a patina that enhances flavor, which many horses find appealing. While sweet iron promotes a moist mouth, it does wear over time and requires maintenance. To care for it, wipe the bit after use to prevent excessive rust buildup, store it in a dry place when not in use, and scrub gently with a cloth or mild abrasive if excessive rust forms.

Magical

I'm not sure what is so different about this bit, compared to others I've tried, but it's making a big difference... My horse is noticeably more forward, uphill, and reaching into the contact.

Disappointing quality and customer service

I bought this bit back in July. Recently, the cheek piece locked up and became completely immobile. I reached out to the company last week to let them know. They responded with a canned answer about bit care and storage and told me to try and use some food grade oil to loosen it up. I tried that to give them the benefit of the doubt, but as the cheek piece is really stuck, it didn't help. I responded to let them know their suggestion didn't resolve the issue and haven't heard back since.

I came on the website to find the specs of the bit so I can start looking for a similar replacement that will be more durable. That's when I saw in the reviews that another customer had the exact same issue with the cheek piece. Clearly this is a known issue with this bit design. Evidently, the other reviewer was seamlessly sent a replacement, while I've yet to hear back from the company. Really disappointing that public reviews get good service, while I tried to let the company address the issue privately and get ignored.

The concept and thoughtfulness behind their bit designs and selection really addresses a gap in the market, but it's disappointing that their quality control and customer service misses the mark.

Disappointed in Durability

I bought 2 of these bits, a 5" and 4 3/4". My horse definitely likes the action of the bit and we've been using the 4 3/4" for our dressage work. Unfortunately the cheek piece has completely locked up, the joint is frozen. I like the action of the bit but I can't afford to replace it every 6 months.

Good option so far

I recently tried this bit after sizing down from my loose ring, and the fit was spot on—seems very true to size. My mare has gone well in it so far and seems to like it. The company was also very helpful and easy to work with, which I really appreciated. The only downside is that after just a week of use the bit has gotten quite squeaky, so I’m docking one star for now while I see how it holds up long term. Overall, a good option and worth trying if you’re considering it.
