CalmBlue Dressage Loose Ring Snaffle
The shape, the material and the features of the CalmBlue tongue relief mouthpiece are all centered around creating acceptance, calmness and enhanced communication while minimising any unnecessary pressure.
The Calmblue mouthpiece shape encourages free movement of the tongue and redistributes pressure away from the center of the tongue that many bits with classic link designs create.
The cannons of the bit move independently to create a precision in communication between the rider and the horse.
The CalmBlue mouthpiece is made of sweet iron which releases a sweet taste as it gets in contact with saliva that many horses prefer.
While the regular CalmBlue mouthpiece has a copper roller on the barrel to enhance acceptance and communication this bit is an adapted version where the copper is set and not rolling to make the bit explicitly dressage legal.
This bit features a loose ring cheekpiece which enables the bit to move more in the horses mouth. This facilitates a subtler, more precise communication and is great for horses that are more advanced in their training or those preferring a less subtle signal from the bit.
Mouthpiece thickness: 12mm tapered to 10mm towards centre
Please note that sweet iron bits oxidise naturally and the blue parts will over time develop a thin layer of rust and turn brown/grey. This is by design as the "rust" is what creates the taste so many horses love.

Is this bit right for my horse?
Riders often choose this bit for:
- Horses with a thick, fleshy tongue that need tongue space
- Low palates, thanks to the slim tapered profile
- Dressage riders needing a legal thin bit: 12mm at the cheekpiece tapering to 10mm solves the thin-bit and legality conflict
- Head tossing linked to palate interference: the barrel link sits low and does not rotate up into the palate
- Horses that chew or grab the bit with their teeth (metal, non-ported)
Worth knowing:
- Sweet iron cannons develop a warm taste that encourages salivation and a softer connection
- This bit will rust, and it needs to: the surface patina is what creates the warm, sweet taste. Do not submerge it in water or expose it to excessively humid or moist environments, and always wipe it dry after use to ensure longevity and function
The loose ring lets the mouthpiece move freely, which encourages a quiet, dry mouth to soften and salivate, and makes leaning unrewarding.
