SmoothShape bits are our take on the Waterford mouthpiece. SmoothShape bits are made of stainless steel that is durable and in this case has a polished, not sanded/matte feel.

The classic Waterford is a bit that’s often used for correcting horse’s that lock their jaws or lean on the bit. The design typically include sharp or protruding links that make leaning uncomfortable for the horse.

Our take on the Waterford mouthpiece is that it need not be sharp or uncomfortable for the horse. The multiple links ensure that the bit is highly mobile and there is not much to “hang on to”.

We recommend this mouthpiece for horses that are heavy and unresponsive and need a highly mobile bit to achieve acceptance.

The Swales inspired Wilson cheek configuration features independent inner rings, which allow the mouthpiece to self-adjust without creating the side pressure often associated with standard Wilson bits. This mechanical refinement is particularly beneficial when combined with a less stable mouthpiece design.

While traditionally a driving bit, Wilson has gained popularity in the jumper rings, where it is used on horses that can occasionally get heavy but are otherwise sensitive and do not require leverage. This bit exerts it's pressure on the side of the face somewhat similar to a full cheek, but offers different pressure points and a lot more movement so is generally a more "refined" option for experienced pairs.

Mouthpiece Thickness: 16mm (note, this is 1-2mm thicker than traditional SmoothShape)

SmoothShape Mouthpiece

Smoothshape is the medium-thick option in our Waterford line. A mouthpiece with smooth edges, minimal pressure points and five links, this design is optimised for mobility and acceptance. This mouthpiece is particularly suitable for horses that can be strong and dull with the aids.

Wilson Cheekpiece

The Wilson cheekpiece is a unique snaffle bit design used to provide lateral control and increase precision in steering by applying pressure on the side of the face. While it has no leverage, it is most commonly seen in disciplines where turning and directional control are critical, such as driving or show jumping.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a highly durable, non-rusting metal that remains smooth and neutral in taste. It is one of the most common materials for bits due to its strength and longevity. Unlike sweet iron or German silver, it does not encourage salivation, but it provides a reliable and maintenance-free option. To care for stainless steel bits, rinse with water and dry after each use, polish occasionally to maintain shine, and disinfect with mild solutions when necessary.
