Frequently Asked Questions
Double-Broken Bits
Double broken mouthpiece has a link between the two bars which is often called a lozenge. This design enables the pressure to be more evenly distributed across the horse's mouth and insert or reduce specific pressure points across the tongue.
Double broken bits are used on all types of horses and may very well be the most common type of mouthpiece in English disciplines. Unless you have a reason to believe that your horse does not tolerate tongue pressure well or prefers a single jointed bit, they are a great starting point for most horses.
We currently carry two types of double-broken bits - the SmoothRide and the ComfortWave.
SmoothRide is a stainless steel mouthpiece with a copper roller whereas ComfortWave is a German Silver mouthpiece with a curvature to better distribute the pressure across the tongue. SmoothRide is the more versatile of the two and often preferred by younger horses.
ComfortWave is often a crowd pleaser among horses that can be inconsistent in the contact and more sensitive. Many horses like the taste of German Silver better than steel.
